Volkswagen Rejoices Over Passat, Jetta, and TDI Sales

We’re proud to announce that VW of Ann Arbor shared in the good news of having record May sales for the Passat, Jetta, and TDI Clean Diesel models. This May, delivering over 10,000 units, the Chattanooga plant produced their 250,000th Passat. Of these Passats, over 31% sold in May were TDI models. Jetta deliveries were up 4.8% compared to last year.

It was a strong month for pickup truck sales, which is a segment Volkswagen obviously doesn’t compete in. Knowing this, CEO Jonathan Browning was extra pleased to see there was a growing demand for the VW passenger cars, diesel models, and hybrid models. Browning stated “We are pleased to see healthy consumer demand for our passenger cars, especially the growing demand for our TDI Clean Diesels and Hybrid line up.”

New Engine Boosts Power in Beetle Turbo and Jetta

The New EA888 Gen 3 engine will provide the 2013 Beetle Turbo, Beetle Turbo Convertible, and Jetta GLI extra horsepower! The 2.0L turbocharged TSI® engine now delivers 210 horsepower, which is a 10 horsepower increase over the Gen 2 engine.

What does this mean for you? The 2013 models of these cars that go on sale this month will have a number of changes, including acceleration speeds. The Beetle Turbo coupe will now sprint from 0-60 mph in 6.6 seconds, which was previously 6.8 seconds. The Jetta GLI will be a tenth faster for manual cars, and the automatic will be two tenths quicker.

Not only is acceleration and power increased, but so is fuel efficiency! The Gen 3 engine is light and more fuel efficient than the previous engine. Due to this, the Beetle has an estimated improvement of 4-8% on the combined cycle.

Kelly Blue Book Named Jetta Hybrid a Top Ten Green Car

Vincentric Victories for Volkswagen

The 2013 Vincentric Best Value Awards results are in! Every year, Vincentric, which is a go-to source for everything you could ever want to know about automotive value, releases a list of the best value cars in each vehicle segment. We at Volkswagen of Ann Arbor are pleased to announce that the VW nameplate took home two awards this year!

The first victory was in the convertible segment: the Volkswagen Beetle Diesel took home top honors in that one. This baby is incredibly efficient, yielding 41 mpg on the highway. Also victorious was the Volkswagen Jetta Diesel, which decimated the competition in the wagon category. The Jetta Diesel is even more efficient than the Beetle Diesel, getting 42 mpg on the highway!

Apple Enthusiasts Will Love New iBeetle

Are you attached to your iPhone? Do you love your VW Beetle? Would a specialized docking station in your car make life easier? If so, the VW iBeetle is for you!

The Volkswagen iBeetle debuted at the Shanghai Auto Show a couple weeks ago. The iBeetle, available hardtop or convertible, will come with a specially developed app and docking station for the iPhone. It’s the first model in the VW lineup to use this integrated iPhone component.

The docking station will be centrally located on the dashboard. The iPhone, once snapped in, will have the ability to use all functions, including navigation, hands-free calling, music, and more. With the Beetle app, the iPhone can also connect wirelessly. The app provides functions called Expert, Trainer, Reader, Postcard, Photo, and Milestones. It also uses Spotify.

The Expert function is like an extended on-board instrument, displaying information like a G-meter. The Trainer compares information like driving times and fuel economy. The Reader reads iPhone messages aloud, and lists messages from social networks. Postcard notifies friends with a digital postcard of your current location, Photo simply sends photos, and Milestones gives “virtual stickers” for completed tasks.

New CrossBlue Coupe Concept Debuts in Shanghai

While the CrossBlue Coupe is neither Blue nor a Coupe, we were nonetheless excited for its debut at the Shanghai motor show. The first CrossBlue concept originally debuted at the Detroit auto show. This time around, there is a new take on the SUV concept model.

The CrossBlue Coupe is a five-seat model similar to the original seven-seater. However, the Coupe has a sportier feel, with much of its design placed on styling. It also has a more powerful turbocharged 3.6-liter engine combined with a pair of electric motors. This plug-in gasoline-electric hybrid can deliver 415 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque using all three power sources.

Volkswagen has made it known they plan to produce a new SUV. The CrossBlue concepts are a good look at what that SUV might entail. Though changes may be made for the production models, both versions of the CrossBlue and CrossBlue Coupe would enter the market in North America and China.

March Marks Great Sales Month for Volkswagen

March was a great month here at Volkswagen of Ann Arbor, as well as the entirety of Volkswagen of America, Inc. In fact, March sales rocketed up and off the charts—3.1 percent better than last March and, believe it or not, the best March we’ve had since 1973!

All in all, the German automaker moved 37,704 units over here in the States. In particular, one of our personal favorites, the Jetta Sedan, was the volume leader, coming in at 12,872 units total. The Jetta SportWagen boosted Jetta numbers with an additional 2,133 units sold, 5.6 percent more than last year.

The Passat, which is made right here in the U.S. at our Chattanooga, Tennessee, factory, has always been an American favorite, and this March proved that. In total, American drivers bought 9,521 new models, bringing the Passat to its best-ever year-to-date figure: 25,909 units. Of the 9,521 units sold in March, an astonishing 34 percent were the all-new diesel model.

Volkswagen also moved 2,599 new Beetles and 1,483 Beetle Convertibles. Sales of the Tiguan were up 24.3 percent to a total of 3,340. The Tiguan experienced its best March and, like the Passat, its best year-to-date ever. We also saw a large number of Golfs moved off the lot: a total of 2,854. Our clean diesel TDI models are becoming increasingly popular, as they made up nearly one-fourth of our March sales.
